St. Vincent Hospital serves the rural area of Lake County and North America’s highest city of Leadville, Colorado. In 1879 the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas opened Leadville’s hospital to care for the hardscrabble miners that were drawn to the community. Now celebrating 139 years, St. Vincent Hospital continues the tradition of caring for the residents and visitors of Lake County and surrounding areas.
Today’s St. Vincent Hospital: A Team, A Community and an Unceasing Focus on Rural Healthcare
The mission of St. Vincent General Hospital District (SVGHD) is “delivering excellent health care to our community with dedication, honesty, and compassion,” and the district is living its mission. Today’s St. Vincent Hospital offers essential core services that bring high-quality care and convenience to downtown Leadville, Colorado.
We offer 8 inpatient beds, county-wide ambulance service and 911 response with staff trained in wilderness medicine, a well-staffed emergency room, an excellent family medicine clinic, skilled physical therapists and visiting specialists, as well as convenient imaging and laboratory services.
Recent successes for SVGHD include the following:
Though St. Vincent General Hospital District faced closure in 2014, the hospital and varied ancillary services are thriving today. We are thankful for taxpayers who voted to increase a district mill levy in 2015 and Lake County Government’s financial support for the district’s embedded ambulance service. This increased funding has bolstered operations.
However, at the core of the district’s success is a team that doesn’t know when to say “when.” The consequence of losing rural hospital care in Lake County was the rallying cry when failure was not an option.
Building on lessons learned and newfound success, St. Vincent General Hospital District board of directors and leadership turn our eye to sustainable growth in services and a new hospital facility. A U.S.D.A. loan for the construction of a new hospital is committed until 2021, which enables the hospital administration and board of directors time to continue strengthening the hospital’s financial position and planning for the future.
I close this letter with gratitude. It is our mission and calling to care. I am so thankful to carry out that mission for our Lake County friends and neighbors and work side-by-side with our dedicated team.
