Anesthesiology at St. Vincent Health is staffed by Charlie Franker, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Charlie is a visiting specialist who comes to St. Vincent from the Midwest Anesthesia Alliance.
Nurse anesthetists are advanced practice nurses who provide anesthesia and related care before, during and after surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. They also provide pain management services.
Charlie comes from a family of nurses and was long fascinated by the variety of roles nurses fill in health care. His interest in anesthesia began in nursing school as he helped patients in the operating room and PACU recovering from surgery. He has extensive experience in pediatrics having worked in the Pediatric ICU at University of Maryland Medical Center in his native state. Shortly after that, he earned his CRNA from Keiser University in southwest Florida.
Charlie incorporates multimodal pain relief into his practice to help facilitate faster and improved recovery. Those therapies center around traditional and emerging techniques focused on regional anesthesia and incorporating adjunctive non-opiate analgesics.
“I’m excited to be a part of a community that is becoming self-reliant in meeting the surgical needs of its population,” says Charlie. “And it’s great to be part of the new facility and new service to Leadville.”
In his leisure time, Charlie spends family time with his wife and baby. He’s also a four-season outdoors enthusiast and enjoys skiing, hiking and mountain biking, with a desire to take up fly fishing and river stand-up paddle boarding next.
