St. Vincent Health

Looking toward the future, St. Vincent General Hospital District has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency, and other health-related offices reside in the old hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent, new hospital facility.

The People Behind the Care: Physical Therapy

Pictured left to right: Makenzie Grevelding, Kelsey Kuehn, David Cimino, Theresa Rutkey, Kelly Bergkessel

As doctors of physical therapy who passionately enjoy mountain sports and recreation, the St. Vincent team of physical therapists endeavor to keep people in motion and doing what they love. They care for Lake County with equal parts science and art, in a culture of caring.

David Cimino, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS

“It’s our role to be patient advocates, teach our patients to advocate for themselves and provide a supportive environment.”  — David Cimino

As the therapy services department manager, Dave offers therapies for injury prevention, general physical conditioning and fitness, and new and emerging treatments. He has specialty experience and training in sports clinical PT, strength and conditioning and dry needling. Dave earned his doctorate from Northeastern University in Boston. And although he was raised in New York, his passion for the outdoors led him to Colorado where he has happily lived and worked for more than a decade.

Kelly Bergkessel, PT, DPT, COMT

“It’s fulfilling to help our patients get out of pain, and to be in a profession that helps people.”— Kelly Bergkessel

Kelly brings a systematic and tailored approach to injury prevention, conditioning, fitness and emerging treatments. In her first career Kelly was an electrical engineer. She soon realized that she missed interacting with people and the joy that it brought her. As a swimmer and triathlete, she had received PT and was drawn to the profession. She returned to school to become a doctor of physical therapy at the University of Colorado and also became certified in dry needling and orthopedic manual therapy.

Kelsey Kuehn, PT, DPT,  CSCS

“Through my experiences, I’ve witnessed how physical therapy supports what you want to do with your life; I decided to pursue physical therapy in order to provide that healing environment for others.” — Kelsey Kuehn

Kelsey is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, and a pelvic floor specialist. She also works with patients to prevent and/or manage osteoporosis. Kelsey earned her doctorate at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. An athlete, Kelsey grew up playing soccer and spent her fair share of time in the physical therapy clinic as a patient, which ultimately inspired her career.

Makenzie Grevelding, PT, DPT

“I was drawn to healthcare, and specifically physical therapy, because I watched it bring significant quality of life back for my dad after a back injury.”— Makenzie Grevelding

Makenzie studied to become a physical therapist at SUNY’s Upstate Medical University. She chose her profession because she wanted to empower people and give them the confidence to return to both their leisure and functional activities in daily life. Makenzie specializes in pelvic floor rehabilitation and concussion care.

Theresa Rutkey, Office Manager

“We’re providing more variety of healthcare and therapy services here in Leadville and that makes me proud to be part of St. Vincent Health and our therapy services department.” — Theresa Rutkey

Theresa is a Leadville localite who knows firsthand the importance of having a wide variety of health services in Lake County. She’s excited that the therapy service department is growing to include specialties like occupational health and speech therapy. Theresa finds it rewarding to help patients heal through physical therapy and improve their quality of life. Theresa is especially pleased when she can help a patient unravel the confusing world of insurance and obtain authorization for treatment.

What: Doctors of physical therapy are specialists in the intricate relationship of the body systems and structures that control how we move. Physical therapy (PT) is hands-on, collaborative care between a patient and a practitioner that aims to ease pain and help a person function, move, and live better. It can both prevent and heal chronic or acute injury. The St. Vincent PT clinic offers traditional therapies along with new innovations for healing, pain management, injury prevention, physical conditioning and fitness.

Fact: Colorado is a Direct Access State, so a referral or prescription from a physician or other healthcare provider isn’t required to receive PT care.
